Faculty of Science News
Congratulations to all Class of 2015 Faculty of Science graduates!
June 10, 2015
On June 9, 2015, Chancellor Lawrence Bloomberg, President Sheldon Levy, Provost Mohamed Lachemi, Dean Imogen Coe, along with Faculty of Science chairs and professors congratulated the 170 Science graduands who attended the faculty’s first solo convocation ceremony (218 Science students had BSc degrees conferred that day).
The graduands received inspiring welcome remarks from both Chancellor Bloomberg and President Levy before hearing from this year’s faculty speaker, Dr. Andrew McWilliams. Always a strong supporter of students and student success, Dr. McWilliams has guided and advised many students over the years. Dr. McWilliams spoke to the graduands about striving “not only to leave a legacy, but also endeavouring to make the world with which we interact a better place than when we arrived.” He also emphasized that, “most importantly, we must act to see our ideas implemented.”
The winner of the 2015 Faculty of Science Gold Medal was Yomna Ally. The Gold Medal is Ryerson University’s highest honour, awarded to students with outstanding academic achievement combined with outstanding involvement with the University, their profession and/or the community. During her years at Ryerson, Yomna was involved with the Computer Science Course Union; served as the president of Women in Computer Science (in that role, she regularly attended conferences to raise awareness to women in the sciences and engineering); and maintained a 4.17 cumulative grade point average. President Levy presented the Gold Medal to Yomna, who graciously thanked her friends and family for all their support, as well as her professor and mentor, Computer Science chair Dr. Alireza Sadeghian.
The 2015 Faculty of Science convocation ceremony concluded with remarks from Provost Lachemi and Dean Coe. A traditional Ryerson University reception, complete with locally sourced popsicles and cookies, followed in the Quad.
