CHEMISTRY is a diverse field that can open many doors for the students who choose to major in this field. Through detailed instruction of the principles of matter and energy, this program strives to imbue our undergraduates with a passion for chemical applications in such channels as: the creation of new materials and products, environmental protection, and antibiotics.
First-year students take interdisciplinary courses in Biology, Contemporary Science, Mathematics and its Applications, and Medical Physics. As you progress to our upper level classes, you have a chance to choose a major, while also undertaking studies in materials, polymer, pharmaceutical and computational chemistry; instrumentation, spectroscopy and chromatography; quantum physics; and environmental science.
Throughout your academic career, you will also be participating in engaging research projects, while given chances to pursue external work placements to gain more practical experiences. Both of these activities involve laboratory work and chances to work alongside professional scientists.
The graduates of the Chemistry program go on to pursue careers as a scientist, researcher or science manager in government or the academic world. They can also seek employment in biotechnology, environmental science, laboratory analytical services, product development and quality control. Some students continue their studies and pursue careers in medicine, dentistry or other health-related fields.
