December 6th: National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
The Importance of December 6th
December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Fourteen women (13 of them engineering students) were gunned down at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal in an act of misogynistic violence.
Every year Ryerson hosts a memorial to mourn lives lost then and in the current year to femicide. Together we reflect and renew a commitment to end men's violence against women. It is an opportunity to reflect and renew our commitment to end men's violence against women. This year our focus is on community care. The memorial will include a teach-portion about how to respond to disclosures of gender-based violence
We are concerned about the ways students, staff and faculty face increased risks of sexual and other forms of gender-based violence under the COVID-19 pandemic. We know home is not always a safe place for everyone. Some violence against women shelters is seeing their calls double, external link, external link in Ontario, while Statistics Canada reports 1 in 10 Canadian women say they are “very or extremely concerned”, external link, external link about the possibility of violence inside the home during the pandemic. The Kids’ Help Phone is reporting a 112% spike in calls related to physical violence in the home., external link, external link It’s imperative that we support one another at this time and always.
