Among the founders of the Centre for Studies in Food Security, Canadian Association for Food Studies and Food Secure Canada, Mustafa has served as board members of International Sociological Association’s research committees on Sociology of Food and Agriculture, and Social Transformations and Sociology of Development; International Rural Sociology Association, Agriculture Food and Human Values Society, and Science for Peace. Currently he serves as a member of the board for the Maple Leaf Centre for Action on Food Security and the Director of Ryerson Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Centre.

International Rural Sociology Society Member of the Council and the Local Arrangements Chair.

Member of the Advisory Committee, Canadian Food Studies.
