Caribbean Studies Certificate

Welcome to Caribbean Studies!

Caribbean Studies courses are housed in the Department of Sociology, and offered jointly with The Chang School.  In addition to individual courses in Caribbean Studies, we offer a new certificate in Caribbean Studies. The certificate program offers an enhanced understanding of the region with the goal of developing and reinforcing strong social, academic, and commercial links between the Caribbean and Canada. It also promotes inter-cultural relations and deepens students’ knowledge of Caribbean history and culture.

The Certificate program and individual courses in Caribbean Studies offers students an opportunity to:

  • study a region that is rich in history and culture, resulting from the clash and blend of Indigenous, African, Asian, and European populations
  • broaden understanding of a region that has often been marginalized politically and economically
  • become familiar with the Caribbean communities in Toronto and the rest of Canada, with a view to facilitating cross-cultural understanding, inclusivity
  • receive a solid foundation in interdisciplinary and academic skills, such as critical thinking, research, writing, comparative analysis, and close reading
