Graduate Students of 2011 Studio Award

Nominator: Dr. Chris De Sousa, Professor, SURP

“I am delighted to learn that my graduate studio group received the Graduate Students of 2011 Studio Award.  I nominated the group because they produced excellent work on the issue of Tax Increment Financing for brownfields; quantitatively examining the issue via Pro-forma analysis and qualitatively through interviews with policy-makers and practitioners. What is particularly admirable about this group is that their research and analysis produced sound results and recommendations that were not exactly what the client wanted to hear, but it was what their client “needed” to hear to address this issue adequately and ultimately move it forward. Minto Planning for Sustainability: Best Student Led Initiative Award

Nominator: Dr. Magdalena Ugarte, Assistant Professor, SURP

“As Co-Chairs of the Equity Diversity and Inclusion Committee at SURP, Gelila and Alex pushed the boundaries of the School's engagement with debates about Indigenous ways of planning. Together, they conceptualized, successfully applied for funds, and coordinated the Indigenous Perspectives in Planning Symposium 2020, the first student-led initiative of this kind in the School. The event brought together and centred the voices of Indigenous practitioners at the forefront of urban planning and community building, opening up spaces for critical discussions about planning practice in the context of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action. The David DeLuca Memorial Award

"I would like to congratulate Andrew Vrana on receiving the David DeLuca Award. Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of working with Andrew on two occasions. The first was in PLG520 (Fall 2019), during which he worked with a group of students to prepare a Secondary Plan for the Mount Olive-Silverstone-Jamestown Area in Toronto. The second was in PLG620 (Winter 2020), during which he worked with a group of students to prepare a Major Transit Station Area Study for the lands surrounding Ajax GO Station, on behalf of the Region of Durham and Town of Ajax.
