“It’s quite exciting to be selected as one of the few Canadian newsrooms in this cohort. Getting into the boot camp reminds me that we really could be onto something new and different,” says Adam Chen, Founder of Talk Media. Talk Media is a media company that creates in-person experiences and events inspired by journalistic practice, and aims to connect audiences with journalists outside of echo-chambers to increase trust and interest in journalism.

Out of 259 international applications, 24 digital news projects that demonstrated a need to serve their communities with better news were accepted in the Google News Initiative Startups Lab. The boot camp bridges the gap between opportunities for digital news ventures and the passionate journalism entrepreneurs behind them.
“Talk Media initially began mainly as an events organization,” says Adam, “but we’ve had to develop alternative digital products in response to COVID-19. The boot camp will help us develop minimum-viable versions of our products we can launch to seek proper market validation. Entering this community of journalism entrepreneurs across Canada and the U.S. will also surround us with people who understand the difficulties of running a start up in this challenging yet crucial industry.”
