Principle Investigator

Dr. Ali Tavallaei

Ali Tavallaei, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Dr. Tavallaei is a Canada Research Chair in Systems and Devices for Cardiovascular Interventions at Toronto Metropolitan University. He is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering. He is also a visiting Scientist at Sunnybrook Research Institute, an Assistant Professor (status-only) at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto, and an Affiliate Scientist at the iBEST Research Centre. Dr. Tavallaei has been engaged with multiple medical device startups and he is currently the President and co-founder of Magellan Biomedical.

Mahdi Tahmasebi

Mahdi Tahmasebi, MSc

Mahdi Tahmasebi completed his undergraduate studies in Physics at the Sharif University of Technology. He completed his M.Sc. at Shahid Beheshti University. He is a Ph.D. student at the MDS Lab. His research focuses on developing new solutions to improve minimally invasive image-guided cardiovascular procedures and particularly for applications in revascularization.

Sina Keshavarz

Sina Keshavarz, MSc

Sina (Mohammad Mahdi) Keshavarz completed his undergraduate studies in Mechanical Eng. at Isfahan University of Technology. Currently, he is a Ph.D. student, and his research focuses on developing an image-guided navigation platform for minimally invasive cardiovascular interventions.

Mahdi Tahmasebi

Mohammad Khoobani, MSc

Mohammad Khoobani completed his undergraduate and MSc studies in Mechatronics at Shahrood University. He is a Ph.D. student at the MDS Lab starting in September 2022. His research focuses on developing new solutions to improve minimally invasive cardiac procedures and drug delivery for regenerative therapy.

Jacob Miller

Jacob Miller, BSc

Jacob Miller did his undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa. Currently, he is an MSc student, and his research focuses on developing new devices and solutions to improve minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures with a particular focus on electrophysiological applications. 

Rene Gilliland-Rocque

Rene Gilliland-Rocque, BSc

Rene Gilliland-Rocque did his undergraduate studies in Biomedical Engineering at the Toronto Metropolitan University. Currently, he is an MSc student, and his research focuses on developing electrical impedance-based methods for tracking of interventional devices for minimally invasive interventions.

Sam Sorrenti

Sam Sorrenti is a senior Electrical Engineering undergraduate student at Toronto Metropolitan University. Sam assists in designing, developing, and testing a force-sensing device to quantify the forces of interventional devices during minimally invasive interventions.
