Research Centres

Canada-China Institute for Business & Development (CCIBD) (external link, opens in new window)  aims to build and advance understanding of China through research, innovative educational and training programs, and influential public events. The Institute serves as a centre of excellence for education and knowledge dissemination of China, past and present day, to Canadian business, academics, policy makers, governments and other stakeholders looking to do business with China and/or to partner with Chinese Organizations.

The Centre for Digital Enterprise Analytics and Leadership (DEAL) conducts transdisciplinary research at the intersection of computer science and social science aimed at transforming organizational big datasets into business assets. Our current research, education, and consulting includes but not limited to Digital Enterprise Maturity Models, Data Management, Business Data Analytics.

Centre for Labour Management Relations (CLMR) (opens in new window)  promotes collaborative, ethical, innovative, proactive and sustainable best practices for labour and management to work better together in a way that results in greater productivity and profitability for businesses, improved job and income security for workers, and decreased inequality and injustice for all of society.

The Cybersecurity Research Lab aims to be a centre of excellence in cybersecurity research and development by conducting cutting-edge research, training the next generation of cybersecurity experts, and spearheading a crucial and ongoing dialogue with the Information and Computer Technology (ICT) industry.

Diversity Institute (DI) (opens in new window)  works with organizations to develop customized strategies, programming, and resources to promote new, interdisciplinary knowledge and practice about diversity with respect to gender, race/ethnicity, Aboriginal peoples, abilities, and sexual orientation.

Entrepreneurship Research Institute (ERI) (opens in new window)  is devoted to investigating the role that entrepreneurs play in modern economies. The Institute focuses on research of high academic and intellectual value, with clear applicability to practitioners in the business community. ERI also plans periodic seminars and symposia on topics of interest to scholars of entrepreneurship.

The Family Business Institute, officially launched at Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM) in 2023, is a platform for family business expertise and collaboration at the Ted Rogers School and across Toronto Metropolitan University. It is a hub for researcheducation and engagement partnerships with TMU students, alumni, faculty, as well as the international global community of family business academics, service providers and business families.

Future of Sport Lab (FSL) (external link, opens in new window)  is a new collaborative lab for sport innovation and research supported and co-managed by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. (MLSE). FSL aims to be Canada’s leader in fostering innovative sport business solutions and technologies, along with related research and insights.

Inclusive Media and Design Centre (IMDC) (opens in new window)  designs, creates, and evaluates inclusive media and technology such as Tecla Shield 3.0 assistive technology, Voicewriter captioning software, and WebMoti, which allows children with Autism Spectrum Conditions to control their social and auditory presence at school. 

Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Research (opens in new window)  works with industry partners to conduct applied research projects that provide our students with opportunities to learn and grow, and that have both scholarly value and significance to the tourism and hospitality field.

Institute for Innovation and Technology Management (IITM) (opens in new window)  aims to find innovative solutions to real-world technology management problems. The Institite understands that these problems are interdisciplinary and, as such, any solution must go beyond traditional views of organization and technology.

Institute for the Study of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) (opens in new window)  The CSR Institute aims to understand the roles and interplay of government, the private sector and civil society in contributing to sustainable development. The Institute is dedicated to becoming a Centre of Excellence on social responsibility issues, producing and disseminating high quality SR research, holding events that explore how SR can be effectively implemented and the challenges associated with such implementation, and to bringing together actors from government, private sector, and civil society (including academia) for constructive learning on social responsibility.

National Institute on Ageing (NIA) (opens in new window)  contemplates both the financial and health aspects of ageing. The Institute produces practitioner-oriented, actionable research, education, and innovation, and forges partnerships with other organizations and institutions, to advance knowledge and inform policy related to the pillars outlined in the National Seniors Strategy.

Social Media Lab (external link, opens in new window)  studies how social media is changing the ways in which people communicate, disseminate information, conduct business and form communities, and how these changes impact the social, economic and political structures of modern society.

The Urban Analytics Institute (external link, opens in new window)  builds relationships within the public, private and non-profit sectors to identify urgent urban challenges and help them implement smart city solutions. The Institute collaborates with partners in research as well as in the implementation of technologies involving big data analytics, deep learning, and artificial intelligence.
