Visiting Scholars at TRSM

The Ted Rogers School of Management receives many requests for visiting scholars. Attracting high quality visiting scholars is important to enhancing research activity and the international reputation of the School. Due to resource constraints, however, we can only make a limited number of formal offers per year.

Visiting Scholar matters are coordinated through the office of the Associate Dean, Research, and the department of Human Resources at Toronto Metropolitan University. The department of Human Resources issues a formal letter of invitation to international visiting scholars, based upon an approval process vetted at the department and decanal level. In the case of domestic visiting scholars, the Dean’s Office issues a letter of invitation based on a similar vetting process. Letters sent by individual faculty members are not considered official, and cannot bind the Ted Rogers School of Management or Toronto Metropolitan University.

In order for a request to be approved, at least two of the following criteria should be met:

  1. The professor is engaged in an active research program that has resulted in a demonstrable track record of widely-recognizable publications.
  2. A faculty member or a colleague within the Ted Rogers School of Management know the professor, can work with the professor, and will be likely to produce important collaborative research.
  3. The professor is a tenured or tenure-stream member of a University with which Toronto Metropolitan University has a formal exchange agreement that is considered a priority.
  4. The professor is being invited as part of the activities of an established Centre/Institute operated by the Ted Rogers School of Management.

In all cases, the professor would need to meet our accreditation faculty qualification standards.

Please also note the following:

  • Approval of any request is subject to space and resource constraints within the Ted Rogers School of Management; and
  • the Ted Rogers School of Management is not responsible for finances, housing, or expenses unless these arrangements are made in writing and approved by the Dean at least one semester prior to the commencement of the visit.

In order to proceed with submission of a “Request to Host a Visiting Scholar/Professor/Student”, you will be required to provide the following information:

  • The applicant’s current c.v.;
  • Letter of support from the visitor's home institution;
  • Name of the sponsoring faculty member (The sponsor will be responsible for ensuring the visit goes smoothly and for brokering any emergencies that arise. The sponsoring faculty member must play the role of host, help the visitor settle in, perform  introductions, and so on.);
  • Name of a secondary sponsoring faculty member in case the first sponsor is out of town, on sabbatical or unavailable (this would normally be the academic Chair/Director or Director of a Centre);
  • Discussion of the benefits of the visit to the Ted Rogers School of Management;
  • The scholar’s proposed rank (e.g., Visiting Professor, Visiting Scholar, etc.);
  • Whether there is a future or current collaborative research project underway;
  • The timeline for the visit (the timeline should be established before the appointment letter is issued);
  • Whether there is need of an office;
  • Whether there is need of a computer & network connections;
  • Whether there is need of a library card & borrowing privileges;
  • Any other prospective resource issues for the School; and
  • Confirmation of funding and/or details on in process funding application (if visitor will be supported by external funding or funding from Ryerson).

Once a Host Request has been approved, HR or the TRSM Office of the Associate Dean (Research) will be in contact with the applicant to confirm personal information, including requirements for health care benefits (if international), either through their home institution or otherwise.

It is strongly recommended that you initiate this process at least 4 to 6 months in advance of the anticipated arrival of the researcher.
