X-Prize for Water

Nick presenting first place cheque to winning team

In March 2017, Urban Water TMU, the Science Discovery Zone and the Department of Chemistry and Biology joined together to put together a hackathon and develop the Water Abundance X-PRIZE. This hackathon challenges teams from around the world to revolutionize access to fresh water by creating a device that extracts a minimum of 2,000 liters of water per day from the atmosphere using 100% renewable energy, at a cost of no more than 2 cents per liter.

Nearly 30 students across various business and science programs are participating in the hackathon - the winner was Team Qwook with their Hygroscopic Coil system.

The Water Abundance X-PRIZE will create decentralized access to water, giving people the power to access fresh water, whenever and wherever they need it.
