Bachelor of Fine Arts
The Creative School’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Interior Design is a four year program with courses in design, technology, history, professional development and visual communication, in combination with educational experiences ranging from site visits and field trips to international exchange opportunities and a required internship experience.

Program Format

Program Goals
- To prepare students for a variety of design careers as well as for continuing and professional education.
- To develop strong skills in fundamental design, design communication and design fabrication.
- To develop a critical knowledge of the history and theory of design, especially spatial design.
- To develop both deep and broad expertise in the design of spaces and objects, with a focus on those spaces and objects that constitute "the interior."
- To ground our teaching and learning in principles of social justice, in a sustainable imperative, and in emerging methods and practices.
*Degree Pathway Updates for 2024
As of 2024, the Interior Design undergraduate program has been updated to a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree. Students admitted for the Fall 2024 term and onward will be awarded the BFA, while those admitted in Fall 2023 or earlier will receive a Bachelor of Interior Design (BID) degree. The BID program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA).
Course Themes
Communication
Visual communication is explored using both traditional (hand-drawn) and computer-generated media. Students become experts in using advanced computer software for modeling, rendering, and virtual and augmented realities.
Design Dynamics
Through hands-on studio courses, students explore the fundamental principles of design: form, material, colour. These courses make full use of the school’s traditional and digital fabrication workshops and explore design in the second and third dimensions.
History of Art & Design
The study of art and design history occurs throughout the four years of the program.
Interior Design Studio
A strength of the program is our immersive approach to design problems. Students are challenged at a very early stage in their interior design education by extensive projects in place-making within both local and global contexts. Projects increase in scale from year one to four. All major fields of design are covered from residential projects to institutional design.
Technology
Beginning with residential building construction in year one, students learn about commercial building construction, building codes and integrated building systems. Students also explore materials, finishes and design detailing. A variety of professional electives, professionally related electives and liberal studies courses, expand student knowledge beyond the boundaries of a professional education.
Professional Practice
Starting in year three, students are exposed to the business aspects of interior design practice. The internship requirement is part of this stream. A variety of electives and liberal studies courses complete the program.
