Global Popular Music

This course will offer a survey of global popular music, investigating how the adoption of western genres have been informed by new local contexts. The growth of diasporic fan bases and globalized movement of music via modern technology will be examined, alongside the impact of regional identities and political movements on music production. Examples from global popular music will be analyzed to illustrate both developments in musical style and music’s connection to social change.
