2014-15 Clinic Participant

What an experience. This is perhaps the most innovative undergraduate class you will ever experience while at Toronto Metropolitan University (Formerly Toronto Metropolitan University). Undergraduate classes seldom tie theoretical principals to real world practice, which can limit the effectiveness of a given course’s learning intentions. The Law and Business Clinic offers students the opportunity to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to real clients, which is an extremely valuable and rewarding experience. My partner and I faced trials and tribulations (excuse the cliché), but we were lucky enough to have the support of our professor and our supervising lawyers, who were there with us every step of the way. No course will prepare you for the professional workforce better than the clinic, and it will also provide you with a taste of what the legal profession is all about. I am currently in the process of applying to law school, and I am confident that the clinic has provided me with the tools I need to be a successful student and an influential lawyer.

Besides the benefit of the practical experience and hands-on learning environment, the clinic will ultimately leave you with an appreciation for the importance of social justice and pro bono legal services. The work you are doing means more than just a grade on a transcript; you are contributing to the well-being of the community and the local economy, which largely depends on the success of small, independent businesses. This is the goal of the clinic. This was my major takeaway. Essentially, this should be the reason you apply to this course and the reason to pursue a legal career. Every individual deserves equal protection of their constitutional rights and fundamental freedoms, and money should not be an obstacle that prevents some people from doing so. Pnina Alon-Shenker will ignite in you a passion for social justice that will serve to make you a better student of the law.

I recommend this course to anyone who wants to make a difference. No course will make you feel more empowered or provide you with the same kind of satisfaction as the clinic.
