Central Station, Antwerp, George Thomas Kapelos Photographer

Research outcomes have been brought into the classroom and studio by George Thomas Kapelos, and these learning environments have contributed to the development of research activities.  Student tectonic investigations illustrated the essay “Looking and seeing: TO Brut, concrete and the education of the architect” (TOBrut, 2007).  Student projects in ARC513 – Theory III provided a framework for two conference papers on architecture and literature: “Buildings, Time and Memory” (ACSA Proceedings, 2008, 85 -91) and “Austerlitz: reading, research and design” (EDRA40, Kansas City MO, 2009). The Fall 2010 Option Studio ASC720 ‘Play/Interplay. Act/React/Interact' explored sun safety and design opportunities in children’s play areas utilizing interactive / reactive architecture. George Thomas Kapelos believes that the engagement of undergraduate and graduate students in ongoing research is an essential component of teaching and learning in a University setting.
