Collaborative SRC Award

Headshot of Elsayed Elbeshbishy

Elsayed Elbeshbishy

Department of Civil Engineering

A leading expert in wastewater treatment in Canada, Elsayed Elbeshbishy develops patented methods and technologies that reduce harmful substances in the biosolids that result from treatment processes as well as the greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted during treatment. He has collaborated with 23 partners across industry, government and academia. His most significant effort is leading a $2.4 million NSERC Alliance Mission Grant on greenhouse gas detection at wastewater treatment plants. With 16 partners, the team is developing cutting-edge GHG detection and quantification technology using stationary devices, drones, hyperspectral cameras and satellite sensors. He currently serves as President of the Canadian Association on Water Quality and has made significant contributions to training the new generation of water researchers and professionals.

Early SRC Career Excellence Award

Headshot of Rania Hamza

Rania Hamza

Department of Civil Engineering

Rania Hamza’s pioneering research in wastewater treatment aims to transform the industry by designing new systems that not only more efficiently recover clean water but also extract valuable resources that can be converted into products for use in other industries. In a short time, she has established a thriving lab that has produced an impressive body of work, including a 2022 Best Paper Award from Case Studies in Chemical and Environmental Engineering. She has collaborated with industry and government partners, such as Hycura, TradeWorks Environmental Inc., the City of Calgary, Toronto Water and the Ontario Clean Water Agency, to drive biotechnology development and adoption in Canada. Hamza represented Urban Water TMU at the United Nations 2023 Water Conference and made a notable contribution to the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development on the removal of contaminants of concern in wastewater.

Knowledge Mobilization and Engagement Award

Headshot of Josephine Pui-Hing Wong

Josephine Pui-Hing Wong

Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing, Faculty of Community Services

As the Research Chair in Urban Health, Josephine Pui-Hing Wong works with systematically marginalized populations to develop community-centred, capacity-building critical public health interventions in mental health and HIV/sexual health in Canada and internationally. Dedicated to addressing systemic health disparities, Wong’s work is founded on the principles of epistemic justice, knowledge democracy and equity. She harnesses an exceptional ability to mobilize different knowledge systems and translate them into social innovations. During the pandemic, she organized a large, multidisciplinary team to co-create an intervention that addressed the acute racism and mental health stress frontline health-care providers felt. This built on previous achievements using similar models in mental health promotion for live-in caregivers and university students in China, as well as capacity-building interventions for HIV stigma reduction.

Social Innovation and Action SRC Award

Headshot of Schelagh McCartney

Shelagh McCartney

School of Urban and Regional Planning

An award-winning architect and scholar, Shelagh McCartney’s innovative partnership-based work addresses complex housing issues to build community wellness for marginalized communities. She is best known for employing community-led governance, design and planning methods with First Nations partners in Northern Ontario and the Northwest Territories to co-create housing solutions that support community well-being and self-determination. This work resulted in the first regional First Nations-led housing strategy in Canada and the co-development of shovel-ready housing designs to directly respond to the ongoing on-reserve housing emergency. In recognition of the impact of her innovative, collaborative approaches, she was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 2021.
