Call for proposals
The Office of the Provost & Vice-President has launched a new series for women and diverse faculty members, contract lecturers, and librarians. The Empowering Women in Academia @ TMU series, offered in hybrid format, is intended to encourage networking, cultivate pan-university cross-discipline collaboration through the sharing of ideas, and foster mentoring among women and diverse academic staff.
The new series, which launched in early 2024, will engage women and diverse academic staff undertaking innovative, ground-breaking and equity-based initiatives in a variety of areas.
Themes may include but are not limited to groundbreaking scholarly, research and creative activities in all disciplines and fields, discussions on overcoming challenges and biases in research environments, strategies for increasing representation of women in research leadership roles, best practices in mentoring programs for women in different career stages, mentorship experiences and success stories, building effective mentor-mentee relationships, showcasing creative and innovative teaching methods and pedagogies that promote inclusivity, addressing gender biases in the classroom and course materials, incorporating diverse perspectives in curriculum development, strategies for creating inclusive and accessible academic environments, initiatives to promote diversity in faculty recruitment and retention, case studies on successful EDIA implementation in academic settings.
Submit your presentation idea for the Empowering Women in Academia @TMU series
Colleagues are invited to submit a proposal for a 15-20 minute hybrid presentation to be included in the Empowering Women in Academia @TMU Series. In your submission, please include your name, school/department or unit, short bio and areas of expertise as well as a title and brief outline of your presentation and why you think it would be of interest to your colleagues.
Proposals are accepted on an ongoing basis. Please submit your proposal by filling out this (google form) google form (external link) . Submissions are limited to one proposal per person. All submissions will be reviewed and those selected will be contacted directly by the Office of the Provost.

Join us for an inspiring lunch as part of the Empowering Women in Academia at TMU speaker series. This session will feature Dr. Alison Matthews David (she/her), Professor and Graduate Program Director of the MA Fashion Program in the School of Fashion, as she explores strategies for creative collaborations across disciplines and career stages.
The guest speaker presentation will be followed by a Q&A with the speaker and an in-person networking session. Advanced registration is appreciated for catering considerations.
About the speaker
Dr. Alison Matthews David (she/her) is Professor and Graduate Program Director of the MA Fashion Program in the School of Fashion. She has a PhD in Art History from Stanford University and has published extensively on nineteenth and early twentieth century dress and material culture.
She is co-founding editor of the open access, multi-media journal Fashion Studies with Dr. Ben Barry. Her most recent research project, Fashion Victims, looked at how clothing physically harmed the health of its makers and wearers in the long nineteenth century. It took the form of a book (2015) and co-curated exhibition (2014-18), as well as a co-authored book for young adults entitled Killer Style (2019).
She is Principal Investigator of the federally funded project, The Fabric of Crime: Forensic Histories of Fashion, which investigates the theme of crime and clothing as weapon, evidence, and disguise. Exhibit A: Investigating Crime and Footwear, the exhibition she is co-curating with Elizabeth Semmelhack at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, opens in April 2024.

This session will feature Dr. Reem El Asaleh (she/her), Associate Professor of Graphic Communications Management at The Creative School, as she delves into the transformative impact of teaching Digital Asset Management (DAM) at the undergraduate level and its benefits to students.

About the speaker
Dr. El Asaleh is an award winner Associate Professor of Graphic Communications Management at The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). She is a member of TMU’s graduate studies under the Master of the Digital Media program and PhD in Media and Design Innovation programs within The Creative School. Her multidisciplinary computer science and graphic communication knowledge was shown in her multiple research projects that elaborates on issues concerning the graphic arts industry. As the founder and the director of the Lab of Excellence in Digital Asset Management (DAM) - LED (www.ledtmu.com (external link) ) she heads the world's first and only lab dedicated to fostering in-depth research and education in DAM technology.
