Regulating Public Space
This course examines the regulation of public space. It traces the historical evolution of the state's efforts to place restrictions on the public's right to occupy spaces like streets and parks. By focusing on issues such as crowd control, vagrancy laws and public protest, the course will address broader themes, including the intersection of policing, power and the law, while demonstrating how contemporary approaches to these issues are socially and historically constructed.
