The Soviet Union

This course explores the history of the Soviet Union from its origins to its collapse. Topics include Soviet efforts to reshape politics, the economy, gender relations, and everyday life; the history of state violence and the creation of the Gulag; the Soviet war effort; and de-Stalinization and the late-Soviet period leading to collapse in 1991. We will also examine the legacy of Soviet rule in the region today.
