Women in Popular Music
This course will examine the role of women in recorded popular music, looking at the interrelationships of gender identity, gender performance, and musical creation. How women have sought agency and independence within the western capitalist music industry model will be examined, using case studies of the lives and careers of female musicians. Examples from western popular music will be analyzed to illustrate the social, cultural, and political contexts that influence female participation in music.
