Jewish Philosophy
This course introduces a selection of major texts and themes in Jewish philosophy. The focus may be on classical (i.e., Philo of Alexandria, Saadia Gaon), medieval (i.e., Maimonides, Judah Halevi) or Enlightenment and modern figures (i.e., Spinoza, Mendelssohn, Buber, Levinas). Questions may include the relationship between creation and eternity, revelation, prophecy and reason, religion and politics, divine command and morality, and the historical continuities and ruptures within Jewish thought.
