Critical Theory

This course examines critical theory, a branch of continental social and political thought which originated with the Frankfurt School. Although by no means homogeneous, critical theorists share roots in Western Marxism and a commitment to the critique of ideologies and social practices that perpetuate alienation and oppression. Thinkers studied may include early forerunners (such as Marx and Lukács), members of the Frankfurt School (such as Horkheimer, Adorno, Marcuse, Fromm, and Benjamin) and contemporary figures (such as Habermas, Honneth, Fraser, and Jaeggi).
