Alicia Natividad

Bio / Key facts: DOB, DOD, Place of Birth, Occupation: Alicia Natividad was born October 1st 1950, in the Philippines. In 1983, she became the first Filipino woman called to the Ontario bar.

Early years/ Motivations: Natividad and her family settled in Canada in the 1970s having travelled around the world for many years because of her father’s work as an engineer. Alicia soon realized that the Filipino community while important contributors to Canadian society, were  underrepresented in the legal system. This influenced her decision to study law and political science at Carleton University (BA, 1977), followed by law school at the University of Ottawa (J.D., 1981).

Key Accomplishments/ Contributions: In 1983, Alicia Natividad became the first Filipino woman called to the Ontario bar. She fulfilled her lifelong dream of opening her own practice in 1995 where she specializes in business law, employment law, real estate and land development and wills, estates and trusts.

Alicia Natividad has won numerous awards throughout her career including the Queen’s Golden Medal (2002), Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), the Most Outstanding Filipino Canadian Award (2003) and the Philippine Presidential Award for Overseas Filipinos & Associations(2004). Most recently Natividad received the Order of Ottawa in 2015 for her outstanding work in the city supporting fellow citizens and uplifting the Filipino community.

Natividad’s legal and community activism and philanthropic activities include tutoring aspiring legal professionals with the Law Society of Ontario and the CETA Mentorship program. Her commitment to women's issues has led to: her founding the Ottawa Women's Network, acting as pro-bono legal counsel for abused women during her time at the Nelson House Shelter, and as of 2015, chairing the National Women’s Liberal Coalition of Ontario where she and other volunteers work to increase women’s engagement in politics and support female candidates.  

As a member and the Canada-Philippines Business Council, she also promotes business and trade relations between Canada and the Philippines.

Later years/ Present day: Alicia Natividad continues to provide legal services for business, real estate, wills and trusts through her Ottawa based legal firm, ASN Law Professional Corporation.

Other Interesting Facts: Alicia Natividad has lived in various parts of the world including Japan, Iran and Greece.
