Covid-19 PPE

10,000+ A20 Face Shields Donated

Project Description

This COVID-19 response project proactively addresses a national product shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE). It builds on a newly founded partnership between the Toronto Metropoloitan University Design + Technology LAB and Glia, Toronto General Hospital, Unity Health Toronto, and St. Michael’s Hospital.

During the COVID-19 pandemic The Design + Technology LAB at The Creative School is voluntarily operating as a localized, configurable micro-factory that is uniquely equipped with an uncommonly broad range of process capabilities that have increased accessibility to on-demand production and distribution and caters to the rapid iteration and fabrication of specialized products and niche manufacturing.

In particular, we have developed a medical-grade face shield that is a critical medical device used to protect an individuals’ eyes, nose, and face from the transmission of COVID-19 via droplet exposure. Each shield is comprised of three parts—a PETG headpiece and visor, and rubber strap. The shield is fabricated in 40 seconds with the use of a laser cutter and designed for comfort, are lightweight, and fit a variety of head sizes. Each shield is able to be sanitized and reused by the frontline workers.
