Claus Rinner PhD, GISP

Biography

Claus Rinner is a Professor, Undergraduate Program Director, and former Graduate Program Director and Chair in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University). He holds the European equivalents of a Bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from Université Paul-Valéry, Montpellier, France; a Master's degree in applied systems science from the University of Osnabrück, Germany; and a PhD in geography from the University of Bonn, Germany.

Dr. Rinner's research and teaching expertise is in the areas of geographic information systems (GIS), cartography, and decision support systems, with applications in public health, social policy, and environmental planning. He leads a New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) project on post-pandemic recovery, holds an NSERC Discovery Grant in the area of geospatial multi-criteria decision analysis techniques, and has also participated in research funded by CIHR, SSHRC, and the Network of Centres of Excellence.

Dr. Rinner features in the October 2023 update of Stanford University's list of the world's top scientists; his career record places him among the 2% most productive researchers in the field of Geological & Geomatics Engineering. His research impact is reflected in a total of over 4,000 citations, with an h-index of 30 and eleven publications with over 100 citations (Google Scholar as of November 2023).
