Angela Glover joined Ryerson’s 25-year club at a ceremony on Feb. 27, 2020. She has been with the Ryerson School of Journalism since November 1994, joining the staff shortly after she graduated from RTA.

“Ryerson feels like home to me, even more so now that my oldest daughter is in third year and my youngest will be attending in the fall,” Glover said. “They grew up with Ryerson as part of their lives.”

Glover was originally hired as a broadcast technician. Her job has evolved over her time at Ryerson. She now specializes in audio and radio as one of RSJ’s News Media Production specialists.

“The pace of technological change has been extraordinary and yet the basics of storytelling remain the same. Radio seemed headed for decline and now podcasting as a form of audio storytelling is exploding,” Glover said. “When I first started students were recording on cassette tape and editing on reel-to-reel machines with razor blades and grease pencils. Now we record onto SD cards and edit with software on laptops or even on phones! That would have been unthinkable in 1994.”

RSJ students have the opportunity to take radio and podcasting classes, including a documentary class where many students have developed work they later sold professionally. Students also have the opportunity to produce audio reports, podcasts and documentaries for other courses, such as the RRJ and the Ryersonian. .

“I've had several students over the years say they never expected to love radio as much as they did and changed their career path because of it. If I can help someone find joy and confidence in what they're doing then that is incredibly rewarding. I'm very grateful I have an opportunity to do what I love,” Glover said. “I've been very fortunate to work with wonderfully talented and creative colleagues who never fail to inspire. My heart lies in working with students. I love teaching. There is nothing like watching a student face down something they thought was daunting only to discover they not only excel at it, but love doing it.”

Professor Emeritus Suanne Kelman and Glover worked closely together from the time Glover was hired until Kelman retired. She praised Glover’s work with students, though she remains suspicious of her beauty routine. .

“As you look at Angela, you are forced to recognize the truth: She sold her soul to the devil to avoid aging. She looks exactly the same as she did when she first set foot in the radio control room. She has spent 25 years saving students from their technical incompetence, inattentiveness and neurosis. They all owe her forever, as do I,” said Kelman.

At Ryerson University, career milestones are honoured at 25, 30, 35 and 40 plus years of service. Glover joined the following RSJ staff and faculty who have previously been recognized.
