Found Form Lab - Indigenous Design Studio at Brook McIlroy

Experimental Track

Found Form Lab is a research group founded at Brook McIlroy that applies experimental digital methods of design and fabrication to timber structures. Found Form Lab operates alongside the Indigenous Design Studio within Brook McIlroy at the intersection of culture, technology and material.

Through the integration of ancient techniques in woodworking with advanced digital methods of design and fabrication we are seeking to increase the value of low-value forestry by-products by using them structurally as part of a contemporary architectural aesthetic. This work incorporates traditional carpentry techniques, 3D scanning, parametric design, and robotic fabrication to precisely arrange the natural complexity of timber branch forms into architectural structures.

Found Form Lab operates as an umbrella for research into timber related projects within Brook McIlroy. Brook McIlroy has completed multiple buildings using CLT and glulam construction and several pavilions using roundwood.
