PNEU

Experimental Project

Pneu is an inflatable installation commissioned by DesignTO (external link)  (formerly Toronto Offsite Design Festival) for their 2017 Opening Night Launch Party.

Pneu is a study of lightning, materiality, and pneumatic structure that was developed using experimental form-finding techniques and DIY fabrication methods.

The installation achieves a delicate balance of pneumatic circulation through it's rectangular-torus form that simultaneously creates positive and negative air pressure conditions. Playing with iridescence and transparency, the inflatables contrasting polyethylene and mylar materials create a surreal spatial experience. The interior of the inflatable is experienced as an infinite looping threshold that is blanketed in variations of colour, light, and opacity. Pneu's central focal point - a reflective mylar column - exemplifies this condition by cascading light throughout the space with the ebb and flow of air through the structure.
