Sept 29th to Nov 3rd (five weeks)

About the Workshop

Make Collective is for beginners who want to explore the basics of 3D modelling and rendering. Hosted by X University's Design Fabrication Zone (DFZ), Toronto's leading incubator for creative entrepreneurs, artists and researchers pushing the boundaries of their industry!

Maybe you’re in the medical industry, considering the possible impact of 3D modelling for the means of creating new 3D printed parts and solutions for your team. Maybe you're a performer looking to render virtual objects with compelling visuals. Maybe you're a gamer thinking about designing your own 3D environments. Maybe you're just curious and excited to try something new in a comfortable supportive learning environment! If you’re new to the world of 3D design, Make Collective: 3D Modelling and Rendering is for you!

*Though this is geared towards working professionals, there is space available for students from X University. Please see a separate enrolment form linked at the bottom of this page.

About the Program

Make Collective is a very supportive, low barrier to entry opportunity for professionals to learn the digital design tools of the trade.

Learn from the pro's alongside other beginners as we take you through the digital designers toolkit. Every week we’ll show you the basics of a new software - 2D pert design in Illustrator, transforming 2D sketches into 3D bodies in Fusion 360, assembling moving parts, rendering models and materials in Dimension, and Building virtual environments in Blender! With each new software you’ll have a low pressure opportunity to test out the tool and make something to share with the group.

What's Included

  • 5 lessons on a multitude of design software used in 3D modelling (Illustrator, Fusion360, Dimension and Blender!)
  • Technical troubleshooting support from the Design Fabrication team
  • An opportunity to learn a brand new skill and boost your resume
  • A supportive community to learn alongside with
  • An chance to hear from Design Fabrication Zone members; professionals in the field of design fabrication who have applied their skills to a variety of creative and non-creative industries
  • Access to the extended DFZ community including exclusive DFZ talks, panels and events

Special Guests

Special Guest 1: David Nuff

Nuff is a creator of "computer-creative-artsy-media things" and a member in our Experimental Track. He uses 3D modelling often in his many design processes, and his design workflow includes many of the softwares we are teaching!

Special Guest 2: Dmitri of Taiga Robotics

Taiga Robotics is a company designing and fabricating their own AI-based robots for dangerous job situations and part of the DFZ's Start-Up Track. Dmitri uses 3D design to build parts, demonstrate the mechanical movements and simulate the material qualities of machines (strength, flexibility, etc).

Special Guest 3: Mads Brimble of Nicnac

Mads is a sculptor, jewelry designer, recent grad from X university, and member in our Experimental Track. Earlier this year, Mads's algorithmically-designed sculpture work was featured in the 2021 DesignTO Festival! Mads uses 3D modelling and rendering to 1) showcase her jewelry pieces in a glamorous way and 2) visualize her installation art in their exhibition environment.
