Just a week into 2020, while others are catching up with back-to-school errands, students at Toronto Metropolitan University’s Department of Architectural Science (DAS) have already been hard at work exploring the idea of the in-between: a condition considered as both a temporal and a physical condition of neither here-or there, this-or-that. A space that is described as in-between is usually denied a specific program (or at least one of significance or that is legible).

This year, students will intervene in an assigned site on campus whose current condition is ‘in-between’ and presents opportunities for transforming its function, experience, and relationship to the campus. Each charrette team will locate its work on one of ten intervention sites and in relation to the ongoing Toronto Metropolitan University Campus Master Plan, and will deploy at least 3 of the Master Plan Themes and Principles in their design investigations including: the city, social inclusion, placemaking, a recognizable and cohesive streetscape, technological change, progressive building design, and health & wellbeing.

This exercise culminates in a celebration and exhibition starting Thursday, January 9 at 5 p.m. The exhibition will remain on display through to January 31st, 2020 in the Paul Cocker Gallery, located on the main floor of the Architecture Building on the Toronto Metropolitan University campus at 325 Church Street, Toronto. The gallery is open Monday - Thursday between 9am - 5pm, and Friday 9am - 4:30pm.
