Proud Pieces of Pride History in Canada
Canada is made up of a myriad of monumental pieces of Pride history and the fight for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights. There are countless significant moments to be shared, but here are just some highlights:
- May 14, 1969 - Canada decriminalized homosexual acts between consenting adults.
- Aug 1, 1973 - Pride week 1973 celebrated the shift from the homosexual movement to the gay liberation movement. It took place in many Canadian cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and more!
- Jan 1, 1978 - Buddies and Bad Times (external link) , one of Canada’s oldest 2SLGBTQIA+ dedicated theatres was launched. This theatre still remains in Toronto, and is used for many events!
- May 16, 1981 - First Lesbian Pride march in Vancouver, with over 200 women that marched through the city.
- July 27, 1990 - The term Two Spirit (niizh manidoowag) was initiated at the Native American and First Nations Gay and Lesbian Conference in Winnipeg.
- July 20, 2005 - Bill C-38 (external link) became a federal law which legalized same sex marriage! This made Canada the 4th country in the world to allow same sex marriage.
- Jan 10, 2020 - The British Columbia court of appeal allows rights to treatment for gender dysphoria
