Happy Pride Month Banner

From all of us here at the Fashion Zone, we want to say a big Happy Pride Month! Pride first flourished as a protest against police brutality (external link, opens in new window) , and was led by Marsha P. Johnson (external link, opens in new window) , a Black trans woman activist and drag queen. Johnson was known to have thrown the first shot to commence the riots, and was recognized for her bravery and leadership. This month, and all months, we celebrate Pride and all identities of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. You are all seen, heard and recognized, and this month, we celebrate it all!

For the month of June, we are celebrating Pride month by taking a stroll down Pride memory lane to revisit some monumental pieces of history, speaking with one of our members who supports the 2SLGBTQIA+ Rubies (external link, opens in new window) , as well as highlighting some Canadian 2SLGBTQIA+ businesses to support!

Pride History

Proud Pieces of Pride History in Canada

Canada is made up of a myriad of monumental pieces of Pride history and the fight for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights. There are countless significant moments to be shared, but here are just some highlights:

  • May 14, 1969 - Canada decriminalized homosexual acts between consenting adults.
  • Aug 1, 1973 - Pride week 1973 celebrated the shift from the homosexual movement to the gay liberation movement. It took place in many Canadian cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and more!
  • Jan 1, 1978 - Buddies and Bad Times (external link) , one of Canada’s oldest 2SLGBTQIA+ dedicated theatres was launched. This theatre still remains in Toronto, and is used for many events!
  • May 16, 1981 - First Lesbian Pride march in Vancouver, with over 200 women that marched through the city.
  • July 27, 1990 - The term Two Spirit (niizh manidoowag) was initiated at the Native American and First Nations Gay and Lesbian Conference in Winnipeg.
  • July 20, 2005 - Bill C-38 (external link)  became a federal law which legalized same sex marriage! This made Canada the 4th country in the world to allow same sex marriage.
  • Jan 10, 2020 - The British Columbia court of appeal allows rights to treatment for gender dysphoria
