The Use of Faculty/Course Survey Results (FCS) in the CUPE Local 3904 Unit 1 Hiring Process

October 13, 2020

To: Members of Contract Lecturer Appointment Committees (CLACs)

CUPE 3904 Unit 1 Contract Lecturers have been given the option of whether they wish to submit online FCS results for in-person or virtual courses they are teaching for Summer 2020, Fall 2020 and Winter 2021. This was communicated to CUPE Unit 1 and 2 Members by the OVPFA earlier this semester for Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 and in March 2020 for Winter and Summer 2020.

As a reminder, a negative inference should not be drawn by the CLAC if these are not submitted. In addition, CLACs should not provide additional scoring to applicants who provide their FCS results for these semesters in their application. Evidence of teaching effectiveness should be established using prior FCS results and other materials.

In addition, we request that the following statement be included in all Unit 1 postings for the duration that the University continues to deliver the majority of its courses remotely:

“While applicants may submit Faculty/Course Survey results from the Winter 2020, Spring/Summer 2020, Fall 2020 and Winter 2021, these results will not be used as evidence of teaching effectiveness by the Contract Lecturer Appointment Committee due to the impact of COVID-19 on these semesters. A negative inference will not be drawn if FCS results are not submitted for these semesters. Alternate evidence of teaching effectiveness may be provided by the candidate for consideration by the CLAC.”

We ask that you please forward this communication to individuals in your department/school who are involved in the administration of the Unit 1 hiring process.
