On October 30th, Ryerson had the great pleasure of announcing a landmark gift of $3 million from The Slaight Family Foundation to create the Allan Slaight Radio Institute in the RTA School of Media. Named for broadcasting pioneer and former President and CEO of Standard Broadcasting Corporation, the Allan Slaight Radio Institute will be a state-of-the-art broadcast and teaching facility that will strengthen our position as the educational leader in radio broadcast and production.
Allan Slaight is well recognized as a trailblazing figure in the Canadian media landscape. His Standard Broadcasting was the largest privately owned media company in Canada until it sold its radio and TV assets to Astral Media in 2007.
As Sheldon Levy noted, “Allan Slaight is an inspiring figure for people passionate about radio. The family’s gift will be transformational for Ryerson students working to follow in his footsteps in developing the industry. We are honoured and thrilled to celebrate Allan’s groundbreaking contribution to radio in Canada in this way.”
In addition to the new broadcasting and teaching facility, the Allan Slaight Radio Institute will work to foster excellence through newly created student awards, support for independent student productions, and hands-on practical experience for students at Ryerson’s digital radio station, ‘Spirit Live.’
There will be more news to come as the Allan Slaight Radio Institute starts to take shape and life in the building
