A message from Dean Charles Falzon in solidarity with the Black community against racial injustice

June 02, 2020

Dear FCAD Community,

It’s been extremely disappointing, angering and saddening to witness the violent atrocities being committed against the Black community. The events that have unfolded over the past few days remind us of the realities of discrimination, racism, and injustice that pervade our society. We acknowledge the pain and frustration triggered by the continuous disregard for Black lives. As a community, we recognize the way we advertently and inadvertently contribute to the problem and the way to move forward is to work together towards real change and accountability. The creative community specifically has a duty to ignite and provoke discussions around social justice, human dignity, and inclusion.

More importantly, it’s our duty to look inwards and tackle systemic racial inequalities and create cultures that are inclusive, equitable, and just. At FCAD, we are committed to anti-racism and stand in full solidarity with the Black community. We are developing a new FCAD Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiative committed to supporting our diverse students, faculty, and staff. We are also creating a new EDI Advisory Committee made up of students, faculty, and staff to consult with us on an ongoing basis on structural and systemic inequalities that are faced by the diverse communities that make up our community and ways to best support them. In addition, we will continue to build on our plans to revitalize the curriculum, improve the student experience, and push for more inclusive hiring practices.

I ask you to show your solidarity by joining the public discussion or sharing your ideas with us at I also encourage those of you who may need additional support to explore all the resources that are available to you at Ryerson.

Black creatives matter.

Black innovators matter.

Black lives matter.
