Mid-Year Break Stay

The University and residences close for the mid-year break.  Student are not permitted to stay in residence during the mid-year break, unless they apply and are approved to stay in HOEM Residence (HOEM) or the International Living and Learning Centre (ILC).  The last day to stay in residence is Saturday December 14, 2019 until 12 pm (noon). Students can return to residence after the mid-year break at 12 pm (noon) on Sunday January 5, 2020.

During the mid-year break, HOEM and the ILC remain open with limited campus and residence services available.  If you would like to stay on campus during this period, you will need to indicate this on your residence application so you can be assigned to HOEM or the ILC.  You will also need to complete a supplementary application in the fall term and be approved by Housing & Residence Life in order to stay over the mid-year break. There will be an extra cost for your stay during the mid-year break period.

What do I need to do to be able to stay over the mid-year break?
  1. In the residence application, indicate that you require a room in a building that remains open over the mid-year break.

  2. In the residence application, include HOEM residence or the ILC as one of your room choices.

  3. In the fall term, complete the supplementary mid-year break stay request form to confirm your interest in staying over the break.

  4. Follow all instructions outlined in the supplementary mid-year break stay request form and approval notification by the dates specified.

  5. Pay the mid-year break stay flat rate fee by the deadline outlined in the approval notification.
Do I have to live in HOEM or the ILC if I wish to stay over the mid-year break?

Yes! HOEM residence and the ILC are the residence buildings that remain open over the mid-year break.

What residence services are available during the mid-year break?
  • HOEM and ILC Residence Services Desk - The desk will be staffed 24 hours/day throughout the mid-year break period.
  • Limited Residence Life Support - There will be at least one Residence Advisor available each day/night of the mid-year break.
  • Limited Maintenance/Cleaning Services - Maintenance and cleaning will be operating on a reduced schedule during the mid-year break, so the frequency of scheduled cleanings will be reduced and a longer wait time can be expected for work order requests.
What campus and residence services are unavailable during the mid-year break?
  • Housing & Residence Life Office - The Housing & Residence Life office will be closed beginning on December 20, 2019 at 12 pm (noon). The office will open on Monday January 6, 2020 at 10:00 am.
  • Ryerson Eats - The residence cafeterias and all other food outlets on campus will be unavailable beginning on December 14, 2019 at 12 pm (noon). The residence cafeterias will open on Sunday January 5, 2020.
  • All Campus Services & Offices - The University is closed during the mid-year break, so University buildings, services and offices will closed as well. Limited Ryerson Security and Facilities Management & Development will be available.
What is the flat rate fee ($) to stay in residence during the mid-year break?

The flat rate fee to stay over the mid-year break is currently under review. 

This fee covers the cost of staying open over the mid-year break with limited services available.

If I indicated that I want to stay over the break in the residence application and change my mind, do I have to stay and/or pay for the stay?

No. You have the opportunity to cancel your interest in staying over the mid-year break until December 2, 2019 at 5 pm.  Cancelling your interest to stay over the mid-year break removes your ability to stay over the break as well as your responsibility to pay for the mid-year break stay.  Cancellations must be submitted in writing to

Cancellations after the December 2, 2019 deadline may be subject to a cancellation fee.  

Cancellations will not be accepted after Friday December 13, 2019 at 12 pm (noon). Residents trying to cancel at or beyond this time will remain responsible for the full mid-year break stay fee.

If I didn’t indicate that I wanted to stay over the break in the residence application, but now need to can I still apply?

Yes! During the supplementary application period in the fall term (November), residents who did not initially indicate they need to stay over the mid-year break can apply to stay. There are a limited number of spaces available on a first come, first serve basis. All residents (in all buildings) will receive notification on when the supplementary application is available.

If you are assigned to a residence building that does not stay open over the mid-year break, you can apply for break stay, however these spaces are extremely limited.

Are there any restrictions on who can stay in residence for the mid-year break?

Yes! Residents whose actions/behaviour have resulted in residence community standards sanctions are not eligible to stay over the mid-year break.

Can I have guests stay with me over the mid-year break?

No. Unfortunately, during the mid-year break, no guests are permitted in residence.

Beginning Saturday December 14, 2019 at 12:00 pm (noon) guests cannot be signed into residence. Regular guest sign-ins will resume on January 5, 2020 at 12 noon.

If you need to have a guest enter residence during the mid-year break please complete a guest exemption request form available in the Housing & Residence Life office. Forms are due to the Housing & Residence Life office by November 22.
