Community is invited to budget town halls to establish priorities for 2019-20.

As President Lachemi noted in a recent article, our community is preparing for an increasingly challenging fiscal environment. While our operating costs continue to rise, universities and colleges across Ontario are anticipating a significant reduction in base funding for 2019-20. As a result, we will have to work together to maintain a balanced budget.

Our guiding principles

At Ryerson, we adhere to five guiding principles when preparing the annual budget:

  1. Prioritize students;
  2. Protect Ryerson’s core business;
  3. Be fair and transparent;
  4. Remain forward looking; and
  5. Conduct wide consultations with the community.

Though we can all expect to face some difficult choices in the months ahead, we should not let this deter our vision, our path or our priorities. Together we can continue to offer engaging experiences to everyone on campus.

Every voice at Ryerson matters

We’d like to hear your thoughts. As part of our approach, the Office of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic, and the University Planning Office have organized the following town hall meetings to give everyone at Ryerson the chance to discuss our 2019-20 budget in a public forum:

  • Monday, February 11, 2019
    6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
    VIC 205
  • Wednesday, February 13, 2019
    1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
    ARC 108
  • Monday, February 25, 2019
    12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
    DSQ 13

We are also launching an Ideas Campaign encouraging faculty, staff and students to share creative, constructive ideas to find savings, to generate additional revenue and to do things in innovative new ways. All suggestions will be reviewed and considered carefully, and we will keep the community informed of our strategy.

Once established, the proposed budget will be presented to Ryerson’s Board of Governors in April for their review and approval.

Where to learn more

The website ryerson.ca/2019-budget will house all information pertaining to this year’s budget planning process and we will share developments on the site as they unfold. As always, we welcome your input along the way.

Thank you in advance for your thoughtful recommendations.
