Ryerson University takes great pride in the scholarly, research and creative contributions of our faculty and researchers. We have created a program of awards and recognition in order to acknowledge excellence in research achievements.

Internal Awards

The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation is pleased to recognize the outstanding contributions to scholarly, research and creative (SRC) activity across Ryerson University. Through four awards in addition to the Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award and the Deans’ Scholarly, Research and Creative Activity Award.

Sarwan Sahota Ryerson Distinguished Scholar Award

The Sarwan Sahota Ryerson Distinguished Scholar Award is presented annually to one or more faculty members who have made an outstanding contribution to knowledge or artistic creativity in their area(s) of expertise while employed at Ryerson. The contribution to SRC activity may be a long term, cumulative contribution or a single, particularly insightful or seminal idea, experiment, application or interpretation.

Award recipient(s) will receive a certificate of recognition and a monetary award of $3,000 as a one-time payment (subject to applicable deductions).

The Distinguished Scholar Award is made available through the joint contributions of Dr. Sarwan Sahota, a retired professor, and Ryerson University.

Collaborative Research Award

The Collaborative Research Award is a university-wide award presented to a researcher or researchers involved in projects and research undertaken as part of a multi-disciplinary or multi-institutional team. This award will be granted to a researcher who excels at creating and maintaining collaborations with industry, university and/or community partners to facilitate research that effects positive changes in their respective field(s).

Award recipient(s) will receive a certificate of recognition and a monetary award of $2,000 as a one-time payment (subject to applicable deductions).

Early SRC Career Excellence Award

The Early Scholarly, Research and Creative (SRC) Career Excellence Award is a university-wide, annual award that allows researchers who are at the beginning of their academic careers to develop independent research programs. It is being presented to an outstanding researcher in the first five years of their academic career, and who has made an outstanding contribution to scholarly, research and creative activity in their area(s) of expertise.

The award recipient will receive a certificate of recognition and a research award of $2,000 as a one-time payment (subject to applicable deductions).

Knowledge Mobilization and Engagement Award

The Knowledge Mobilization and Engagement Award is a university-wide award presented to one or more researchers who have demonstrated outstanding effort in communicating research beyond the University and significant impact in shaping evidence-based policy and practice. This award recognizes the ability of the researcher(s) to facilitate conversations and collaborations with organizations and communities outside the academy, combining knowledge from different spheres of society to generate new ideas.

Award recipient(s) will receive a certificate of recognition and a research award of $2,000 as a one-time payment (subject to applicable deductions).

Social Innovation and Action SRC Award

The Social Innovation and Action Scholarly, Research and Creative (SRC) Award is a university-wide, annual award being awarded for a completed rigorous research project, typically with community partners, focused on advancing innovation in social goals or action (normally described as poverty alleviation and development, education, health, human rights, diversity and inclusion, violence prevention, peace building, sustainability, capacity building and/or engagement). Projects may include a range of social innovation initiatives, such as corporate social responsibility, public private partnerships, new ventures or process improvements within existing non-profit or government organizations.

Award recipient(s) will receive a certificate of recognition and a research award of $2,000 as a one-time payment (subject to applicable deductions).

Deans' Scholarly, Research and Creative Activity Award

Recognizes individual faculty members on an annual basis for outstanding scholarly, research and creative (SRC) achievements and impact on their disciplines during the previous academic year.
