Retail Management

Graduates with a BComm (Honours) in Retail Management often start their careers in merchandise buying and planning (e.g. merchandise or allocation analysts, assistant buyers, category managers), marketing (i.e. traditional, digital/social media, pop-up retail),  e-commerce, or operations management. (e.g. rotational development & management training programs).

Typically, these roles are within apparel retailers, grocery and packaged goods, department stores, general merchandise or shopping centre management firms but may also include retail consulting firms, retail banking, or new start-ups.

A number of our graduates have also gone on to start their own businesses or pursue graduate education such as an MBA (opens in new window)  or Master of Science in Management.

Yes, real-world experience is a key to standing out in a competitive job market.  Our co-op and internships integrate academic learning with workplace experience, allowing our students to apply theory and develop skills toward their professional goals.

All students in the Ted Rogers School of Retail Management will complete at least one documented internship (i.e. a single work term of 400+ hours) but may choose to apply for entry to the co-op program (a total of 4 work terms) at the start of their 2nd year in the degree.

Past co-op and internship work terms have included roles in operations, marketing, consulting, buying and merchandising for companies such as Adidas, Artizia, Costco, Enterprise, Hudson's Bay Company, IBM, Ivanhoe Cambridge, TJX Canada, Staples, TD Bank, and many more!

The Ted Rogers School of Retail Management is the first post-secondary institution in Canada to offer courses that will prepare students to write the Category Management Association (CMA) certification (opens in new window)  exam to be recognized as a Certified Professional Category Analyst (CPCA) upon graduation.

Category Management is integral to all of retail and is well-established in the grocery, packaged goods and general merchandise sectors.  Some examples of product categories may include “Breakfast Cereals”,  “Soft Drinks and Carbonated Beverages”, “Console Video Games”, “Hair Care Products”, “Running Shoes”, Kitchen Appliances” and many more.

The Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) degree originated in Britain and traditionally involves majoring in a specialized area of business.  A Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is intended to provide students with general knowledge in all the functional areas of business, and may or may not include a major. At this time the Ted Rogers School of Management and false only offer BComm (Honours) degrees but for practical purposes, most universities in Ontario only offer one or the other (BComm or BBA) and consider them largely  interchangeable.
