Creativity: the skill of the future

Educators and industry agree: creativity will be the key that unlocks the solutions of tomorrow

Creativity is far more than the skill behind the paintbrush or the delicate details of design. It exists across jobs, industries, corporate levels, and titles. It is a transdisciplinary concept that interconnects skill sets and breeds openness, agility, entrepreneurship, and adaptability. Creative thinking allows engineers to adjust to complexities, drives companies from idea to IPO, and breathes new life into decaying business models.

“Creativity is at the heart of innovation, driving insights and learning, and expanding what’s possible. Many of today’s global problems are too complex to be solved by any one specialized discipline,” said Charles Falzon, Dean of The Creative School. “These multifaceted challenges require lateral thinking, visionary leadership, inspirational design, and new social narratives. This is at the heart of what The Creative School is about.”

Creativity is obviously vital in all professional life. But crucially, creativity is about the passion that drives us to make something, to innovate, to become more than we were

"Creativity is obviously vital in all professional life. The skill of the future. Today.

A recent report from LinkedIn, covering over 660+ million professionals and 20+ million jobs, placed creativity as the top skill in-demand by employers for 2020. The ability to be creative will set professionals apart in today’s job market, across disparate sectors and industries.

The company noted creativity will benefit students for the rest of their careers as a soft skill that will “never go out of style.” Unlike hard skills such as computer programming or data analysis, creativity is the piston that drives us to pursue new approaches to problem solving.

Furthermore, educators say creativity is an undervalued and underdeveloped skill set that is yet to be fully emphasized in classrooms. A study by Adobe on the importance and prevalence of creative skills taught in schools found a whopping 69 percent of educators worldwide agree there is not enough emphasis on these skills in today’s curricula, reporting that, “these skills must be nurtured in our schools to ensure student success once they graduate.”
