Create release conditions to control access

What is a release condition?

Release conditions are tools that allow you to restrict the access to certain elements of your course (content, announcements, quizzes, assignments, grades, etc.) by specific criteria.

There are a number of categories of criteria that you will find in Release Conditions:

  • Membership - releasing items to users enrolled in section 011 of the course, or a member of a specific course group (in the Groups tool).

  • Achievement/Grades - releasing items when a student achieves a certain grade in the Grades tool, an assignment, a quiz, or has received an award (using the Awards tool).

  • Course Activity - releasing items when a student accesses a particular piece of content, or participates in a particular discussion topic

Please note:
Do not use the “Released final grade score” condition, as Ryerson does not allow the release of the final grade in Brightspace. Final grades are only released to students in RAMSS. Due to this policy, this condition will never be triggered.

Please note that each tool approaches release conditions a little bit differently. Here, we will try to cover some of the common steps to adding release conditions.

Create and Attach a new release condition
  • Locate the release condition options in the tool you are using, and click the option to create. In some tools, this is named "Create and Attach", while in others it is simply labelled "Create".
  • If you have already created this release condition for use elsewhere in your course shell, try the "Attach Existing" (or "Browse") option.
  • Next, click to "Select Condition Type" to view the full list of conditions available for that particular tool.

Note that different tools may have some different options. For example, Intelligent Agents has some additional options around membership.

Select the specific condition type

Next, review the available release conditions and select the one that best suits your needs.

Conditions are grouped based on their associated tools, so look for Classlist, Assignments, Quizzes and Grades as headings (for example).

Complete the criteria for the condition

Each condition has a unique set of settings that you will need to review and apply.

In this example, the "Grade value on a grade item" condition was selected, which requires that you select the grade item to consider, as well as the grade threshold for release.

Click "Create" when done.

Select whether all or any conditions must be met

Finally, you need to determine how Brightspace will behave if there is more than one condition applied.

  • All conditions must be met
  • Any condition must be met

The default setting is that "all conditions must be met", meaning that if there are two or more release conditions listed here, only users who have met all of them will have this item released to them.

For example, students who achieve a grade greater than 80% on the test AND are a member of Section 011.

Alternatively, if you select that "any condition must be met", a user who has met any of the conditions will have the item released to them.

For example, students who achieve a grade greater than 80% on the test OR have achieved 80% on the makeup assignment.

Add/edit release conditions to modules

Release conditions can be added to modules to ensure students cannot view particular modules/content until the condition has been met. There are several types of release conditions available, including restrictions based on section number or restrictions based on whether specific content has been viewed.
