Systems Setup and Troubleshooting

Use this information to help avoid and/or troubleshoot the most common technical issues in the Ryerson University Financial Information System (RUFIS or Oracle) and the Invoice Approval System (MarkView).

Supported browsers

  • Mozilla Firefox ESR or Firefox 77  (recommended)
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 (recommended)
  • Apple Safari 11 (recommended)
  • Microsoft Edge 44
  • Google Chrome 83

Browser and application setup

If you are working in the financial systems and are experiencing technical issues, please review these settings as a first step towards troubleshooting.

As the financial systems rely on Java in order to run forms, the three Java-supported browsers we recommend are Firefox ESR, Internet Explorer 11 and Safari 11.

Mozilla Firefox ESR or Firefox 77

You can verify your Mozilla Firefox browser version by selecting Firefox > About Firefox from the browser menu. The pop-up window will indicate your version.

Note: Firefox 77 is available for both Windows and Mac operating systems.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 11

You can verify your Internet Explorer browser version by selecting Settings > About > Internet Explorer. The recommended version is 11.

Apple Safari 11

You can verify your Safari browser version by selecting Safari > About Safari.

Note: Version 11 remains the recommended version as the more recent releases of Safari, versions 12 and 13, do not support Java or the Java applet at this time.

Microsoft Edge 44

You can verify your Edge browser version by selecting Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.

Note: This browser is only available on Windows operating systems.

Google Chrome 83

You can verify your Chrome browser version by selecting Menu > Settings > About Chrome.

Note: On Windows operating systems, Chrome will load the forms and the HTML pages.  On Mac operating systems, Chrome will only load the HTML pages.

Make sure pop-up windows are allowed/enabled in your browser permissions.

Windows users

Mozilla Firefox
  • From your Firefox browser window, select the menu option Tools > Options.
  • Select the Content tab from the Options window.
  • Uncheck the Block Pop-Up Windows box.

Alternatively, to block pop-ups entirely:

  • From your Firefox browser window, select the menu option Tools > Options.
  • Select the Privacy and security panel
  • Under the Permissions section, uncheck the box next to Block pop-up windows to disable.
Internet Explorer 11
  • From your Internet Explorer browser window, select the menu option Tools > Pop up Blocker > Turn off pop-up blockers.
  • If you have compatibility view settings turned on for Internet Explorer 11, we recommend clearing the settings as they have been known to interfere with the financial systems' funtioning. To do so:
    • Select the menu option Tools > Compatibility view settings > Website listings > Remove ryerson.ca.
    • Select the menu option Tools > Compatibility view settings > Compatibility view settings > Uncheck "Display intranet site".

Mac users

Mozilla Firefox
  • Select Firefox from your browser menu and choose Preferences.
  • Select the Privacy and Security option from the Preferences window. Scroll to the Permissions section.
  • Uncheck the Block Pop-Up Windows box.
Apple Safari
  • Select Safari from your browser menu and choose Preferences from the dropdown menu to access the General Preferences dialog box.
  • Select the Security tab to open the Security Preferences window.
  • In the Web Content section, uncheck the Block Pop-Up Windows box.

If you have issues accessing the systems while using Mozilla Firefox, you may need to adjust the security settings. Make sure the financial systems are indicated as trusted sites in your Firefox browser by doing the following:

  1. From your Firefox browser menu, select the menu option Tools > Options.
  2. Select Security.
  3. Select Exceptions.
  4. In the Address of Website field, enter the following URLs:
  5. Click the Allow button after each URL is added.
  6. Click the Save Changes button.

In order to access the reporting, budget and inquiry (General Ledger) options in RUFIS, Java needs to be installed on your computer, which will allow a Java applet to run.  Acceptable Java versions are Java Version 8 Updates 241, 251 or 261. Please visit www.java.com, external link to download Java.

Once you select your general ledger menu option in RUFIS, you will be prompted to open or save a Java applet. Click on Save and then Open to launch the RUFIS General Ledger forms or RUFIS Reports options.

Windows users

If you're using the Mozilla Firefox ESR or Mozilla Firefox 77 browsers, the Java applet (JNLP file) may not always recognize the Java web launcher needed to start RUFIS forms. To correct this, please select the Open menu > Options > General section > Applications > Find the JNLP file and change the action from "Save" to "Use Java web launcher".

Mac users

If you're using the Mozilla Firefox ESR or Mozilla Firefox 77 browsers, the Java applet (JNLP file) may not always recognize the Java web launcher needed to start RUFIS forms. To correct this:

  • Uninstall TextWrangler, which comes as part of the Java install. To do so, open the Applications folder > Select the TextWrangler.app file > drag and drop it into the Trash.
  • Next, in your Firefox browser, select the Tools menu > Options > General > Applications > Find JNLP file and change the action to "Java web start".

Once complete, open RUFIS and select "GL responsibility" to launch the forms.

Troubleshooting

RUFIS (Oracle) and the Invoice Approval System (Markview) are on a restricted network, which means that users can only access these systems while connected to the Ryerson administrative network. If you are either working off-campus, using a wireless connection or using the Ryerson academic network, you need to be logged in to Ryerson’s virtual private network (RU-VPN2) or the systems will not work. Learn more about RU-VPN2, including how to request, extend or terminate access.

To reset your systems password, click the Login Assistant link or contact the RUFIS Help Desk. You may be required to provide information that will verify your identify.

When new windows do not open as expected, it is often due to browser settings. To troubleshoot, try the following:

  • Open your browser settings and verify that pop-ups are allowed.
  • Clear your cache and log in to RUFIS again.
  • Confirm that you've completed step 4 in the browser and application setup instructions, and that the Java applet is not blocked in your browser settings.
