About Maureen Helt

Meet Maureen Helt, your Ombudsperson at Toronto Metropolitan University. With a career spanning over 25 years in the legal field, her comprehensive background is characterized by a wealth of experience in legal matters, dispute resolution, and investigations. Maureen is highly regarded for her impeccable interpersonal skills and is known for upholding the values of integrity, accessibility, and fairness. 

In her most recent role, Maureen served as the Vice-Chair and Adjudicator at Tribunals Ontario for the past four years. In this capacity, she expertly mediated and adjudicated cases across various boards, including the License Appeal Tribunal, the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, the Ontario Parole Board, the Ontario Civilian Police Commission, the Social Benefits Tribunal and more. She also held the position of Acting Associate Chair for three Tribunals, where she played a pivotal role in collaborating with teh FIPPA and Access to Information teams to manage requests directed at Tribunals Ontario. 

Maureen's journey to her current role has been enriched by her past experiences at the Ontario Energy Board and the Law Society of Ontario, where she collaborated closely with Compliance and Investigation teams. Throughout her career, she has gained extensive expertise in matters pertaining to procedural fairness, while also embracing the fundamental principles of impartiality, independence, and confidentiality intrinsic to the role of the Ombudsperson. 

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Marueen is an active member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Canada. She holds an LLM degree with a specialization in Health Law, further underscoring her dedication to continous learning and staying at the forefront of her field. 

Outside her professional life, Maureen is deeply engaged in her community, serving the boards of Woodgreen Community Services, the Aspen Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Community Advisory Board of Toronto South Detention Centre.
