Student Employment

The Career Boost and Work Study Research Program provides on-campus employment to eligible full-time undergraduate students returning to Ryerson.

The program works in partnership with academic units, administrative units, faculty, staff and students to support the practice and scholarship of learning at Ryerson University.

To participate in the program, students should complete the following steps:

  1. Review program details and eligibility requirements listed below and apply online through the Career Boost website, opens in new window. It is on the onus of the student to ensure they meet eligibility requirements, and maintain eligibility requirements.
  2. If approved, students may view job postings by logging in to the Career Boost website, opens in new window or the Work Study Research Assistant Program, opens in new window.
  3. If you are successful in obtaining an interview, please bring a copy of your approval email to the interview.

New minimum wage effective fall 2020:

Career Boost On Campus: Minimum $14.25/hour to $17/hour
Work Study Research Assistant: $18.85/hour

Am I Eligible?

In order to be considered for spring/summer Career Boost, you must submit a separate Spring/Summer Career Boost application, opens in new window for review.

Note: the spring/summer and fall/winter Career Boost applications are two separate applications. If you are interested in a spring/summer Career Boost position, you must submit a new application, even if you have received approval for fall/winter Career Boost.

All of the following criteria must be met in order to be eligible for spring/summer Career Boost:

  • You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Ontario or Protected Person.
  • You are an undergraduate student.
  • You were enrolled in a full-time course load* this current academic year.
  • You have a clear academic standing and a cumulative GPA (CGPA) 2.0 or higher for the current academic year.
  • You will be returning to Ryerson as a full-time* undergraduate student in the upcoming academic year for both the fall and winter terms.
  • Submit a full time course load* for each term by participating in course intentions for the upcoming academic year.
  • You have applied for OSAP or for out-of-province student funding for the previous fall and/or winter term(s) and have an assessment. If you did not apply for OSAP or out-of-province funding for the previous academic year, you may be required to provide a written explanation as to why you did not apply for student funding.
  • You demonstrate a financial need of at least $100.

You are not eligible for spring/summer Career Boost if:

  • You are graduating in June or October.
  • You are in the Collaborative Nursing Program in years 1 and 2 studying at George Brown or Centennial. Collaborative Nursing students are not eligible for Career Boost during their studies at the college campus.

*Full-time is defined as a minimum of 3 billing units for the fall term and 3 billing units for the winter term (or 2 billing units per term if you are a student with a registered permanent disability).

Calculating Unmet Need

The unmet financial need is calculated based on the financial information you report on the budget section of the approval application. This section allows a student to report their living costs and resources while in school. Important: The $100 unmet need threshold does not mean the assessment of your OSAP or out-of-province funding amount.

Career Boost & Work Study Research Assistant Programs

The Career Boost and Work Study Research Assistant Programs provide on campus work opportunities for current full-time undergraduate students. The information below will help guide you through the process.

  • It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they apply for Career Boost & Work Study Research Assistant Program approval by the deadline date outlined above. If a student applies for a position and is offered the position, but has not received final Career Boost approval, this does not guarantee that the student is eligible for Career Boost & Work Study Research Assistant approval.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they maintain all eligibility requirements outlined above for the Career Boost & Work Study Research Assistant, for the entire duration of their position.
  • Approval by Student Financial Assistance does not guarantee that all students will receive a Career Boost & Work Study Research Assistant position. It is the student’s responsibility to apply and interview for positions.
  • Students can only hold one Career Boost or Work Study Research Assistant position at any one time. Students can apply for as many jobs as they wish, however once they’ve accepted a position and been hired, the student is expected to honour their commitment to one employer. If a student considers any subsequent offers, they may not be eligible for Career Boost & Work Study Research Assistant positions. On a case-by-case basis, students planning to move from one position to another will be required to provide an explanation for the change in positions and confirm agreement from both employers and Student Financial Assistance.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to enter hours worked into eHR on a biweekly basis and ensure the employer approves worked hours by the payroll deadline. Monitor your hours to ensure that you do not exceed the maximum number of hours allowable per week.
  • Questions regarding payroll, inputting hours, etc. should be directed to Human Resources.
  • Students who receive a Career Boost or Work Study Research Assistant position must contact Student Financial Assistance if there is a change in course load, CGPA and/or academic standing which may impact their eligibility. Students will be paid for all work hours already completed but may be required to resign from their position if they are no longer eligible.
  • If you are on a work term or an exchange, you will not be eligible for Career Boost for that term (e.g. if you are in courses for the Fall term and on a work term for the Winter term, you will only be eligible for Career Boost for the Fall term).

Student Responsibilities

Students can use this information as a checklist.

  • You have applied for OSAP or out-of-province student funding for the current academic year and have an assessment. If you did not apply for OSAP or out-of-province funding for the current academic year, you may be required to provide a written explanation as to why you did not apply for government funding.
  • Apply for Career Boost or Work Study Research Assistant approval and receive an approval before scheduling any interviews.
  • Maintain a full-time course load (3 or more courses per term/2 or more courses for students with a permanent disability), clear academic standing, and cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.0 or higher in order to remain eligible for Career Boost or Work Study Research Assistant positions.
  • Contact Student Financial Assistance (via jobs@ryerson.ca) if there is a change in course load, CGPA and/or academic standing.
  • Apply for Career Boost or Work Study Research Assistant jobs only after receiving an approval through email from Student Financial Assistance.
  • Give a copy of your approval to the employer at the start of the job interview.
  • Confirm the work hours and rate of pay during the job interview.
  • Ask the employer for a copy of the job responsibilities.
  • Ask the employer to outline their expectations, protocol for keeping in touch with supervisor, break times (if applicable) and reporting hours worked.
  • Ask the employer how work assignments and supervision of work will be managed.
  • Submit a request in advance to the employer to change hours worked. Provide an explanation and ask about any consequences if hours or days of work are changed.
  • Enter hours worked to eHR on a biweekly basis.
  • Check that the employer approves work hours by the payroll deadlines in eHR.
  • Monitor hours and do not exceed maximum hours per week.
  • Ask the supervisor regularly for feedback about work performance.
  • The employer, in consultation with human resources, may terminate employment if the student is not meeting job expectations or is frequently absent.
  • Submit the Experiential Learning Reflection Interview at the end of your work term.
