Alexander Waddling

I originally chose Undeclared Arts because I was unsure which area I wanted to study. I had a strong interest in sociology, philosophy, and psychology, but couldn't make up my mind – and for the first year, I didn't have to. After taking a year of courses in various disciplines, I came to see that my main area of interest was psychology. I could still take courses in other areas I found interesting. It was that freedom I really appreciated. I didn't feel like I would paint myself into a corner. Now, I'm exactly where I want to be after having the opportunity explore all of my options. Undeclared Arts was particularly helpful for me because I was able take social science courses that were not available to me in high school. The biggest help was the program administrator who helped me understand exactly what interested me most.

There are many advantages to studying at Ryerson. Since Ryerson emphasizes theory and practice, I have had many opportunities to connect what I am learning in the classroom with real-world applications. I have initiated a successful national charity campaign, now in its third year, that raises awareness of violence against women. In addition to my academic studies, I’ve been involved in many extra-curricular on-campus initiatives that have helped me acquire the skills I need to continue to develop the campaign. Without Ryerson, its staff and faculty, I would not be where I am now.
