Dr. Pamela Sugiman
Dr. Pamela Sugiman, Dean of Arts

Dr. Pamela Sugiman is Dean of the Faculty of Arts (currently on leave) at Toronto Metropolitan University (since July 2016). Prior to this, Dean Sugiman was Chair of the Department of Sociology at TMU (since 2012).

Enhancing undergraduate and graduate education, teaching and student life within the Faculty of Arts are among Dr. Sugiman’s priorities as dean. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Toronto and specializes in oral history, memory studies, women’s history in Canada, racism and racialization, work and labour, and working-class history.

Over the course of her career, Dean Sugiman has built a reputation for collegiality, transparency, creativity and vision. She is committed to issues of social justice, equality and inclusion as an academic leader and researcher.  As Dean of Arts, she has promoted the recruitment of Indigenous faculty, development of Indigenous education, democratic engagement, migration and immigration and student engagement and student-worker experience.

In recognition of her excellence in research, teaching and service, Pam is a recipient of the Errol Aspevig Award for Outstanding Academic Leadership (TMU), Outstanding Contribution Award (Canadian Sociological Association), Marion Dewar Prize in Canadian Women’s History and has been named the Lansdowne Lecturer and Distinguished Women Scholar, University of Victoria, as well as the W.L. Morton Lecturer, Trent University.

She is a board member of the National Association of Japanese Canadians, Pathways to Education Canada, the Atkinson Foundation, and the National Coalition of Canadians Against Anti-Asian Racism. 

Dr. Carolyn Johns
Dr. Carolyn Johns, Interim Director

Dr. Carolyn Johns is a Full Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration. She holds a PhD in Comparative Public Policy from McMaster University, as well as a Master of Arts (MA) in Public Policy and Administration from McMaster University, a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from the University of Toronto and an Honours Bachelor of Arts [BA (Hons)] in Political Science from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Dr. Johns was the inaugural Graduate Program Director (GPD) of the interdisciplinary doctoral program in Policy Studies, and has served as GPD of the MA program in Public Policy and Administration.

Dr. Johns is currently a Principal Investigator on the Global Centre for Understanding Climate Change Impacts on Transboundary Waters funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) (2024-2029), a project focused on water governance vulnerabilities and resilience at the community and transboundary scales in the North American Great Lakes region and other communities and transboundary regions across the world.

Dr. Johns serves as Chair of the Geoffrey Bruce Fellowship Program in Canadian Freshwater Policy; as a member of the International Joint Commission's Great Lakes Water Quality Board (external link) (external link) ; and as a member of Toronto Met Urban Water.
