Toronto Metropolitan University Gold Medal
The Toronto Metropolitan University Gold Medal is the university's highest award, presented to students with outstanding academic achievement combined with extraordinary contributions to the life of the university and/or their professional community and/or the community at large.
The award is open to both full- and part-time graduating students. Each Gold Medal recipient is considered for the Board of Governors Leadership Award and Medal.
While there is no monetary value associated with the Gold Medal, each recipient is awarded a gold medal with their name inscribed, along with a letter and certificate signed by President Lachemi.
- Registration as a full- or part-time graduate student in a program of study leading to a master's or PhD;
- A nominated student must have applied to graduate at the upcoming Fall Convocation ceremonies or have already graduated at the previous Spring Convocation ceremonies;
- At the time of nomination and graduation, the student must have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.67 or above; (Program departments have the discretion to nominate a student with a slightly lower CGPA); and
- Each nomination package submitted to the Dean's Office must contain a Nomination Form, two Letters of Support; all necessary signatures including the support of the student's Program Department Chair/Director.
- Academic proficiency as demonstrated by a current minimum CGPA of 3.67 (as confirmed by the Student Awards and Scholarships Office (SASO) and scholarly, research and creative (SRC) activity. Other curricular indicators may be considered; and
- Nominees must have demonstrated outstanding involvement with the university, their profession, and/or the community (extracurricular, voluntary and unpaid activities that benefit a broader community), as well as a leadership role beyond the Faculty-level.
- Students must be nominated by their program department;
- All nominations must be supported by the Program Chair/Director who can also be a nominator;
- The Program Chair/Director is not obligated to nominate or support a nomination if in any one year there is not a suitable candidate;
- All nominations must have a nominator and support letters from two other supporters (one of which must be from the Toronto Met community, e.g., a faculty member, a coach, an advisor, etc.) attesting to the nominee’s contributions;
- The written letters of support attesting to the achievement(s) of the candidate should be as complete as possible; and
- Incomplete forms will not be considered.
August 25, 2023, is the deadline to submit complete nomination packages to the appropriate Dean’s Office for review by the selection committee.
Final decisions on the one award per Graduate Faculty and one for Interdisciplinary Studies (7 in total) will be made by the appropriate Dean and/or Associate Dean. The Vice-Provost and Dean, Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will make the final approval.
The Faculty Deans will inform the Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (YSGPS) of their first and second choice recipients in writing by September 18, 2020. SASO will monitor the recipients’ final grades, academic standing and graduation eligibility and will confirm with YSGPS their final eligibility. The Student Awards and Scholarships Office will make announcements and convocation presentation arrangements with each recipient.
Graduate medals will be awarded annually at the Fall Convocation ceremonies to one student from each of the following: Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Communication and Design, Faculty of Community Services, Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, Faculty of Science, Ted Rogers School of Management and Interdisciplinary Studies.
