TRSM Students Win Trading Case at World’s Largest Simulated Market Challenge

March 05, 2018

A collaborative team featuring students from Ryerson’s Ted Rogers School of Management and the Faculty of Science topped a crowded field of international competitors to win a prestigious Rotman International Trading Competition (RITC) case.

The combined Ryerson team featured students from TRSM’s School of Accounting & Finance (SAF) and Faculty of Science’s Financial Mathematics, and went head-to head with students and their faculty advisors from universities worldwide, for a unique two-day simulated financial market trading challenge.

The Ryerson squad (Anthony Leo, Binny Brar, Evgeniaa Khaikhina, Harjas Singh, Prajeesun Bale and Yue Zhao) competed against 52 teams from top universities across the globe at the event, held February 22-24, 2018, winning the Flow Traders ETF case.  This case challenged students to put their critical thinking and analytical abilities to the test by evaluating the liquidity risk associated with different tender offers. The team also came in 8th in the MATLAB Volatility case. Overall, Ryerson ranked an impressive 21st in the competition – their best showing yet.

The outstanding performance of our student team also attracts attention from the RITC sponsors and creates job interview opportunities for our top performing student traders. For instance, Flow Trader has approached our students and asked for their resumes, while the other major hedge fund, Schofeld, is finalizing a job offer with one of our Algorithm traders.

TRSM Associate Professor of Finance Dr. Yuanshun Li, who was a faculty advisor for the team, says, “We are incredibly proud of our team’s performance at this year’s RITC event.  This is the 9th year our students participated at this competition and they have consistently improved their results each year.” He adds, “I would like to thank students and other faculty advisors for their diligent effort in the preparation of our student team every Friday afternoon since the beginning of January. I really appreciate their dedication to support student extracurricular events.”

Other faculty advisors who helped students with the cases at this year’s event included TRSM’s Dr. Yoontae Jeon and Dr. Niushan Gao from the Department of Mathematics.
