Dr. Atefeh (Atty) Mashatan awarded NSERC and SSHRC grants

Eight TRSM-led research projects received grants from two of the most important research funding bodies in Canada – the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

NSERC promotes and supports discovery research based in the natural sciences and engineering.  Its Discovery Grants provide the core funding and freedom that enables Canada’s best researchers to pursue their most promising ideas and breakthrough discoveries, and its Discovery Launch Supplement provides timely resources to support Early Career Researchers as they establish a Discovery Grant funded research program.

Here are the four TRSM research projects that received NSERC grants in the Fall 2018 competition:

  • Dr. Anatoliy Gruzd (Discovery Grant) - “Studying Human Dynamics at a Massive Scale: The Development and Assessment of a Distributed Approach for Effective Visualization of 100+ Million-Node Social Networks,” $140,000.
  • Dr. Aziz Guergachi (Discovery Grant) - “Explainable AI, Data Analytics and Industrial Engineering Methods for Primary Care,” $180,000.
  • Dr. Atefeh (Atty) Mashatan (Discovery Grant & Discovery Launch Supplement) “Enhancing Data Security and Privacy for IoT Devices,” $152,500.
  • Dr. Mohammad Nikoofal (Discovery Grant & Discovery Launch Supplement) - “Defending Against Intentional and Non-Intentional Threats Under Information Asymmetry,” $142,500.

SSHRC is the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports post-secondary based research and research training in the humanities and social sciences. Its Insight Grants enable scholars to address complex issues pertaining to individuals and societies, and its Insight Development Grants support research in the initial stages.

Here are the four TRSM research projects that received SSHRC grants in the Fall 2018/Spring 2019 competitions:

  • Dr. Tony Hernandez (PI) and Dr. Dogan Tirtiroglu (Insight Grant) – “The Transformation of Shopping Centres in Canada,” $264,774.
  • Dr. Norman Shaw (PI), Dr. Sari Graben and Dr. Sonya Graci (Insight Grant) – “Improving Financial Inclusion for Indigenous Peoples in Urban and Rural Ontario,” $57,658.
  • Dr. Danielle Lamb (PI) and Dr. Fei Song (Insight Development Grant) - “Contract Employment: Trap or Trampoline? Examining the 'Signal' Associated with Temporary Work in Canada,” $48,600.
  • Dr. Atefeh (Atty) Mashatan (Insight Development Grant) - “Barriers and Opportunities in Blockchain Technology Adoption,” $42,600.
