Congratulations to Dr. Frederic Dimanche, Director of the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, for winning this year’s Assistant Vice President (AVP), International’s Global Learning Award.

This award recognizes an individual or team (faculty or staff) who have made significant contributions to Global Learning at Ryerson University.

“I believe that global learning experiences can be life-changing and powerful and I strive to help the Ryerson community become more global-oriented, so I feel honoured and grateful to win this award,” says Dr. Dimanche. “The award recognizes the work I have done since I arrived at the Ted Rogers School five years ago in fostering global learning opportunities for students. It means a lot to me, and it inspires me to continue and do more for Ryerson in its efforts to become more international.”

Since joining the Ted Rogers School, Dr. Dimanche has worked on developing a culture of learning that has a global focus, such as hosting international scholars and supporting events as part of the research series for the Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Research.  He has also expanded opportunities for students to go abroad, and has raised money and created a budget to help them take part in these opportunities.

For example, Dr. Dimanche gave students the chance to participate and compete in international case competitions, such as the GENIO Worldwide Innovation Summit in Amsterdam and the STR Revenue Management competition in New York. He also took his Field Studies in Hospitality and Tourism class to Jamaica (external link)  to study community-based tourism development.

In addition, Dr. Dimanche has encouraged students who worked as research assistants to submit papers with faculty members for international academic conferences, and has encouraged faculty to increase international research collaboration and writing efforts. In fact, Hospitality and Tourism Management faculty had the highest international collaboration ratio for published work at the Ted Rogers School.  And, for the first time ever, ShanghaiRanking's 2019 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects ranked the school in the Top 200 in Hospitality & Tourism Management.

Dr. Dimanche increased the number of international students in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program. In 2015, the share of international students was a little more than 5%.  By 2018, the recruiting class consisted of about 50% international students. To ensure these students were academically successful, Dr. Dimanche obtained funding from the Provost's Office to hire Teaching Assistants dedicated to helping them succeed.

“Frederic Dimanche makes great things happen,” said Dean Daphne Taras. “His energy and commitment are infectious, and he inspires us all. He is so deserving of this award!”

The AVP International's Global Learning Award will be presented to Dr. Dimanche at Ryerson Awards Night on March 30, 2020 at the Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre.
