Ted Rogers School’s Hospitality Leisure Management subject ranked #7 worldwide

April 08, 2022

The Ted Rogers School of Management’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program has ranked #1 in Canada and #7 in the world for one of the indicators in the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022.

In the Hospitality Leisure Management subject area’s “citations per paper” index, the Ted Rogers School’s HTM program ranked seventh out of 150 worldwide programs and first out of nine Canadian programs. Citations are when other academics and experts reference the researcher’s work and are a measure of the work’s relevance and influence.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject (external link, opens in new window)  are compiled annually to help prospective students identify the leading universities in a particular subject. Research citations, along with the results of major global surveys of employers and academics, are used to rank universities. This ranking covers a total of 51 disciplines, and includes some 1,300 universities from 80 locations around the world.

“This is great news for our school, for the Ted Rogers School of Management and for Ryerson University,” says Dr. Frederic Dimanche, Director of the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality & Tourism Management. “We have collectively made much progress in research in the past five years, putting #HTMRyerson for the first time in the ShanghaiRanking and the QS ranking; this establishes us as an internationally recognized program.”

The QS Rankings by Subject methodology  (external link, opens in new window) considers five components: Academic reputation, Employer reputation, Research citations per paper, H-index and International Research Network (by broad-faculty area).

“This is an amazing achievement and a milestone for HTM and Ted Rogers School research,”  says Dr. Ozgur Turetken, Ted Rogers School’s Associate Dean, Research. “I am thankful to all who got to contribute to this success: not only our amazing tourism and hospitality researchers, but their students, administrative staff and other support groups. Reaching the top is a challenge, staying there is even a bigger one, which I am confident HTM is fully prepared to face.”

This is not the first time HTM at the Ted Rogers School has placed well in prestigious rankings. It was listed among the Top 100 worldwide in the 2021 Shanghai Ranking of academic subjects (external link, opens in new window) , and placed second in Canada for its overall rank and citation performance of the journal articles.
